Over 60% of all housing units have a garage or carport. When it comes to homes owned by the resident, this number jumps to almost 80%. With so many homes having garages, it’s important to know more about them.
After all, if you’re buying a new home, you need to know if the garage is big enough for your car. In order for it to be big enough, the garage door needs to be big enough. But what are these standard garage door sizes?
Standard Garage Door Sizes
The size of garage doors varies, just like anything else. There is always a range and some homes even have custom garage door sizes. But the general range isn’t that large. These are the two types of garage doors and their most common sizes.
The standard single-car garage door is 8 to 9 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high. Most new homes install 9x7ft garage doors. This is large enough for almost any vehicle aside from an 18-wheeler or large tractor.
For example, the Ford F-150 is the most popular vehicle in the United States. It is large than most vehicles but still is less than 7×7 without a lift kit. So it can easily fit into the standard garage doorway.
The standard double-door garage is 16 feet wide and 7 to 8 feet high. As you can see, it is the same height and simply double the width. So you can fit two cars in side by side without having to park differently.
Even if you only have one car, it can be nice to have the extra space, especially if your garage is already a two-car garage. One door on a two-car garage can look quite silly if it isn’t done right, and the extra door won’t have any negative effects.
Standard Garage Size
Now that we’ve gone over the size of the standard garage doors, it’s time to talk about garage sizes in general. While the size of your garage door is important, the size of your garage is important too. You want to have enough room.
Since most cars are within a certain range, what matters more is how many cars you have. These are the standard garage sizes for people with one to four cars. If you have more than four cars, follow the pattern.
One Car Garage
The average size for a one-car garage is 12 x 20. This gives two to three feet of clearance all the way around. The height is fairly standard as it will be a few feet higher than the garage door. A garage can be larger than this, but not much smaller.
Any smaller and it will be cramped when walking around. You don’t need a lot of clearance around the car, but it can make one feel claustrophobic if there isn’t even enough space to walk through the garage without climbing over the car.
Two Car Garage
The standard two-car garage is 18×20. As you can see, it doesn’t give as much clearance per car as a one-car garage does. This is something that happens when you add another car because you need your base space and then added space for each car.
Three Car Garage
The most common three-car garage size is 28×20. You may notice by now that the depth for each garage size is the same. This is for two reasons. Because 20ft is a common width for a house and because the clearance in that sense rarely changes.
Four Car Garage
Finally, things start to change when you get four cars. Most likely, one of the cars is larger, so most four-car garages are 36x22ft. Two feet is added to the depth of the garage because of this, though 20ft usually works just fine.
However, the most popular vehicle in the United States, as previously mentioned, is the Ford F-150. This vehicle has certain styles that can make it 20ft long. In these cases, a larger garage is needed. But the base Ford F-150 is shorter than 20ft.
If you don’t use your garage for parking your car and instead use it for recreational reasons, the size varies. More often than not, one of the above sizes is used as a regular garage is turned into an insulated garage.
The size needed for a recreational garage isn’t that much different than the size needed for a living room or family room inside. So in short, a recreational garage is pretty much like an interior room as far as size is concerned.
What Size Of Garage Door Do You Need?
The size of the garage door you need depends on the size of your vehicles. You need to be able to comfortably drive your car through the opening even if you have added a few feet by attaching something to the top.
Most people don’t consider anything but how big their car is when they measure it or even the factory size. But if you get a lift kit or attach cargo to the top, you still need to be able to get into your garage.
This isn’t all that difficult to find out. You can either measure the size of your vehicle both width and height or you can look up the size of your make and model. Make sure that there are a couple of feet of clearance.
Unless you’ve done something to your car, then the size will be exactly what it says on the company’s site. So look it up for an accurate guide on how big of a garage door that you need for your garage.
When measuring for a garage, you need to measure length as well. Make sure there is enough space to walk all the way around the vehicle. After all, you don’t want the door to fall on the back of your truck.
Garage Door Styles
Just like front doors, garage doors have many different styles. Yes, you can get craftsman style, contemporary, or classic. But what we’re talking about isn’t the design style but rather, the way that the garage door retracts.
Roll-up garage doors roll up like a tube of wrapping paper or a yoga mat. They are simple and take up the least amount of room. When rolled up they appear as a cylinder at the top of your garage door opening.
Side sliding garage doors slide open like any other type of sliding door. Generally, they work like shoji doors only they slide in front of the wall instead of into the other door. This gives a lot of room and doesn’t crowd the ceiling.
This is the most common type of garage door traditionally. They are built in sections, or panels, so that they can fold up easily and bend with the tract and the curve of the garage. This is what most new houses will have as well.
Side-hinge doors are a rather rare type of garage door that open like regular doors. They are often found on carports or sheds that have been converted into a garage. They are usually opened manually and look much different than other garage doors.
Tilting garage doors are a unique mechanical garage door style that is one solid piece. It tilts up and usually into the ceiling. It is similar to a sectional garage door but is one solid piece, though the mechanism is the same.
Garage Amenities You Want

A parking mat is a great investment that is good for your car and your garage floor. They prevent rolling, sure, but they also prevent all sorts of stains and contaminants from getting on your garage floor.
Garage Door Opener
If you don’t have an automatic garage door opener, then you should get one. They are much cheaper than they used to be and can be programmed to open almost any type of garage door. Even an old one that you have.
It doesn’t matter if you use your garage for something other than parking or not, an organizer can help keep things tidy. You can use one for car tools or for things you find in the car but don’t want to put away.
